Karat measures purity out of 24: 18K gold is 18 parts gold to 6 parts other metals, such as silver, copper and zinc, which make it harder and change its color. 18K is fine jewelry gold, used for engagement rings and luxury watches: softer and more yellow than 14K.
How the 18K price is worked out
