Questions

What is the spot price of gold?

The price for buying or selling gold for immediate delivery, quoted in US dollars per troy ounce. It moves all day as banks and traders buy and sell around the world. The price above is the middle of the live buy and sell quotes for spot gold (XAU/USD).

What is today’s gold price in the USA?

Gold trades worldwide in US dollars, so today’s gold price in the US is the spot price at the top of this page, per troy ounce. It updates every minute while the market is open.

How much is gold worth per gram?

Divide the price per ounce by 31.1035, the grams in a troy ounce. At $4,115.66, that’s $132.32 a gram of pure gold. For jewelry, multiply by the gold content: 14 karat is 58.3% gold. The karat table above does this for you.

Why do dealers charge more than the spot price?

The spot price is for large amounts of gold between banks. Coins and bars cost more to make, ship and sell, so dealers add a premium, usually a few percent on 1-ounce coins and bars and more on small pieces. When you sell, they pay a little under spot. See our guide to gold bullion.

What is a troy ounce?

The unit gold is priced in: 31.1035 grams, about 10% heavier than a regular (avoirdupois) ounce of 28.35 grams. A kilo is 32.15 troy ounces.

When does the gold market trade?

Almost around the clock, from Sunday at 6:00 PM ET to Friday at 5:00 PM ET, with a short break each day from 5:00 to 6:00 PM ET. When it’s closed, this page shows the last price.

Why does the gold price change?

Mostly because of interest rates, the US dollar, the Fed, inflation, fear and big buyers like central banks. We explain each one in Why is gold going up? and Why is gold dropping?

Is this the gold futures price?

No, it’s the spot price. Gold futures on COMEX usually trade a little above spot, because a futures contract delivers later and holding gold until then costs storage and interest.
