What the ADP report is
ADP, the payroll company, counts how many private-sector jobs were added or lost in the month, using anonymized pay data from more than 26 million workers. It comes out at 8:15 AM ET on the Wednesday before the government’s jobs report, and since 2025 ADP has also published a smaller weekly estimate on Tuesdays. It leaves out government jobs, which the official report includes.
ADP vs the BLS jobs report
- Different data: ADP uses its own clients’ payrolls; the BLS surveys about 120,000 businesses and 60,000 households.
- Often different numbers: in September 2026 ADP showed 90,000 private jobs, while the BLS counted 29,000 jobs in total.
- Markets care more about the BLS, but a big ADP surprise can move the dollar, yields and gold on Wednesday morning.
