From the FOMC’s statements. The Fed cut by 1.75 points in total from September 2024 to December 2025, then raised rates in September 2026 as inflation stayed above its 2% target.
Why the Fed stopped cutting
The Fed cut rates in 2024 and 2025 as inflation came down from its 2022 peak and hiring slowed. In 2026, inflation stopped falling and stayed above the Fed’s 2% target. The Fed held rates through July, with three officials voting for a hike that month, then raised rates in September; its statement cited inflation and tension in the Middle East. Most officials then expected one more hike in 2026.
