TL;DR
- VGT split 8-for-1: shareholders of record on April 17, 2026 got eight shares for each one, and the ETF began trading at the split price on April 21.
- Four other Vanguard ETFs split the same day: VUG 6-for-1, MGK 5-for-1, VOOG 6-for-1 and VO 4-for-1.
- Your holding was worth the same before and after, with no tax due. Vanguard did it to keep share prices easy to trade.

What it meant for your shares
- Value: unchanged. 10 shares at $800 became 80 shares at $100.
- Taxes: none. Vanguard said the splits don’t trigger any tax; your cost basis per share is divided by eight.
- Dividends: VGT’s quarterly payout per share is also divided by eight, so your total is the same.
- Limit orders: open orders at brokers are usually adjusted or canceled around a split, so check yours.
What VGT holds
VGT tracks US information technology stocks, so it’s dominated by a few giants, above all Nvidia, Apple and Microsoft. That makes it a concentrated bet on big tech and AI. Those companies’ own splits: Nvidia, Apple and Microsoft.
