What the index measures
It combines several signals into one number each day, mostly about bitcoin: how volatile prices are against their recent average (25%), momentum and trading volume (25%), social media activity (15%), bitcoin’s share of the whole crypto market (10%) and search trends (10%); a survey component (15%) has been paused. It’s published by alternative.me.
How traders use it
- As a contrarian signal: extreme fear has often come near lows, and extreme greed near tops, in line with “be fearful when others are greedy.”
- As context, not timing: it can sit in extreme readings for weeks while prices keep moving the same way.
- Alongside the news: see what’s moving bitcoin right now on why bitcoin is falling.
What the numbers mean
- 0–24: extreme fear
- 25–44: fear
- 45–55: neutral
- 56–75: greed
- 76–100: extreme greed
