What’s moving yields

Headlines from the last two days the desk tagged as Treasury-yield news, with their score for the market they matter most to.

What moves the 10-year yield

  • Inflation: investors want a higher yield when they expect prices to rise faster. Hot CPI reports push it up.
  • The Fed: expected rate hikes lift yields; expected cuts lower them. The 10-year moves less than the 2-year, but it moves.
  • Growth and jobs: a strong economy lifts yields; a weak jobs report usually sends them down.
  • Deficits and supply: the more the government borrows, the more bonds investors must absorb at Treasury auctions.
  • Fear: in a crisis, money rushes into Treasuries, pushing their price up and their yield down.

Why it matters

  • Mortgages: 30-year mortgage rates usually sit 1.5 to 3 points above the 10-year yield and move with it.
  • Stocks: a higher risk-free rate makes future profits worth less today, which weighs most on tech and growth stocks.
  • Gold: gold pays no interest, so rising real yields usually hurt it. See why gold drops.
  • The dollar: higher US yields tend to attract money into dollars.

Questions

What is the 10-year Treasury yield today?

5.146%, live at the top of this page, +6 bp from the last close.

Is a 5% 10-year yield high?

By the last 15 years’ standards, yes: it spent most of 2010 to 2021 under 3%. By longer history it’s about average; it topped 15% in 1981.

Why does the 10-year yield move when the Fed doesn’t?

It reflects where investors expect rates and inflation to be over a decade, so it moves on data, deficits and fear, not just Fed decisions.

What is a basis point?

One hundredth of a percentage point: a move from 5.10% to 5.15% is 5 basis points.
