What the Dow is
The Dow Jones Industrial Average follows 30 of the biggest US companies, from Apple and Microsoft to Coca-Cola and Goldman Sachs. Unlike the S&P 500, it’s weighted by share price, not company size: the highest-priced stocks move it most. It’s the oldest US stock index, going back to 1896. Alphabet joined on June 29, 2026, replacing Verizon.
Questions
What is the Dow Jones at today?
52,848, updated every minute during the 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM ET session; Dow futures trade almost around the clock.
Can you buy the Dow Jones?
Not directly, but the DIA ETF tracks it, and Dow futures (YM, and micro MYM) trade almost 24 hours a day.
Why does the Dow move hundreds of points?
Because it’s quoted in points and is above 50,000, a 1% move is more than 500 points. Percent changes are the better way to compare days.
