How the Dow is calculated

Add up the share prices of the 30 stocks and divide by the Dow divisor, a number that’s adjusted for splits and membership changes so the index doesn’t jump when they happen. Because of that, a $500 stock counts five times as much as a $100 stock, whatever the companies are worth. That’s why high-priced stocks like Goldman Sachs and UnitedHealth carry so much weight.

Recent changes

  • June 29, 2026: Alphabet replaced Verizon.
  • November 2024: Nvidia replaced Intel, and Sherwin-Williams replaced Dow Inc.
  • February 2024: Amazon replaced Walgreens.
