Each later month costs a little more: that’s the cost of carry (interest and storage), not a forecast.
The contracts
- Gold (GC): 100 troy ounces. A 10-cent move is $10, so $1 in gold is $100 per contract.
- Micro gold (MGC): 10 ounces, $1 per 10-cent move: a tenth of the size.
- Active months: February, April, June, August, October and December, with other months listed but thinly traded.
- Hours: Sunday 6:00 PM to Friday 5:00 PM ET, with a break from 5:00 to 6:00 PM each day. See gold market hours.
How to read the curve
When later months trade above spot, the market is in contango, which is normal for gold: holding gold until a later date costs interest and storage, and futures prices build that in. The higher interest rates are, the steeper the curve. A curve that flattens or inverts (later months below spot) would mean unusually tight supply of physical gold.

Questions
What is the gold futures price today?
The front-month COMEX price at the top of this page, per troy ounce. It updates every minute, about 10 minutes behind the exchange.
Why is the gold futures price higher than spot?
Because a futures contract delivers later, and holding gold until then costs interest and storage. That premium is the cost of carry, not a prediction that gold will rise.
Which gold futures contract is the front month?
The nearest active month that most traders use, shown first in the table. Traders roll to the next one a few weeks before each expires.
Can I trade gold futures in the US?
Yes, through a US futures broker. Micro gold (MGC) is the smaller contract many beginners start with. See how to trade XAU/USD in the USA.
