ETFs or mining stocks?

Gold ETFs like GLD, IAU and GLDM hold real gold bars in vaults, so their price follows the price of gold, minus a small yearly fee. They’re the simplest way to own gold in a brokerage account. See how gold ETFs work.

Gold mining stocks like Newmont and Agnico Eagle are companies. Their profits depend on the gold price, but also on their costs, debt and mines, so they usually move more than gold: a 1% move in gold can mean a 2–3% move in a miner, in either direction. GDX holds a basket of them, which spreads the company risk.

Questions

What is the stock symbol for gold?

Gold itself has no stock symbol. Spot gold is quoted as XAU/USD, and gold futures trade on COMEX under GC. On the stock market, the best-known gold ETF is GLD, followed by IAU and GLDM.

Is buying GLD the same as owning gold?

Close, but not quite. Each GLD share represents a fixed amount of gold held in a vault, which shrinks slowly as the fund takes its yearly fee. You own fund shares, not the gold: you can’t ask for the bars, but you can sell in seconds during market hours.

Why doesn’t a gold ETF move exactly with gold?

Three reasons: the fee slowly reduces the gold behind each share, the ETF only trades during US market hours while gold trades almost around the clock, and its price can drift slightly above or below the value of its gold during the day.

Do gold stocks pay dividends?

Many mining companies do, and their dividends can grow when gold is high. ETFs that hold gold bars pay nothing, because gold earns no interest.

When do gold stocks trade?

During US stock market hours, 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM ET on weekdays, with extended trading before and after. Gold itself trades from Sunday evening to Friday afternoon, so ETFs often open higher or lower than they closed.
