Levels to watch

Today$57.341$57.734
This week$55.937$58.466
This month$55.603$67.757

Traders watch recent highs and lows because many orders sit around them: a break above the week’s high or below its low often brings a bigger move.

What moves silver

  • Gold, rates and the dollar. Silver usually follows gold, and both rise when real interest rates and the dollar fall. See what moves gold.
  • Industry. More than half of silver demand comes from industry: solar panels, electronics and electric vehicles. Strong factory data and growth in China help; recession fears hurt.
  • Supply. Most silver is mined as a by-product of lead, zinc and copper, so supply can’t jump just because silver is expensive. The market has run a supply deficit for several years.
  • Policy and trade. In 2025 the US added silver to its list of critical minerals, and tariff fears pulled metal into New York warehouses. When tariffs were put on hold in January 2026, silver fell as much as 7–8% within hours. See what happened.
  • Investment flows. Buying and selling of silver ETFs like SLV, and positioning in silver futures, can push the price far in both directions.

What would push silver higher, or lower

Higher: falling real yields and a weaker dollar, rate cuts from the Fed, strong solar and electronics demand, supply problems at big mines, or a rush into precious metals on fear.

Lower: rising yields and a stronger dollar, a hawkish Fed, a slowing global economy that cuts industrial demand, or a fall in gold. After big rallies, silver can also drop fast on profit-taking.

The gold/silver ratio

The ratio is how many ounces of silver buy one ounce of gold. A high ratio means silver is cheap next to gold, and a low one means it’s expensive. Many traders watch it for moments when silver looks stretched in either direction.

What the futures say

COMEX silver futures usually trade a little above spot, because holding silver until a later date costs storage and interest. That premium isn’t a forecast. For how futures prices work, see the future for gold, which works the same way for silver.

Questions

Will silver go up?

Nobody knows for sure, and anyone who promises is guessing. What you can watch are the drivers above (rates, the dollar, gold, industrial demand) and the levels the price is respecting. This page and the LemonTrades desk track both.

What is XAG/USD?

The price of one troy ounce of silver in US dollars. XAG is the code for silver, the way USD is the code for the dollar.

Why is silver more volatile than gold?

Its market is much smaller, and it’s both a precious metal and an industrial one, so it reacts to money flows and to the economy. Moves of 3–5% in a day aren’t unusual.

What is the gold/silver ratio today?

It’s in the stats at the top of the page, updated every minute: the gold price divided by the silver price.

Is the futures price a forecast?

No. Futures trade a little above spot because of storage and interest costs until delivery. It reflects the cost of waiting, not where traders think silver is heading.
