TL;DR
- Search TSLA in the Robinhood app, choose dollars or shares, then pick a market or limit order. Fractional shares start at $1.
- Robinhood’s 24 Hour Market lets you trade Tesla from Sunday 8 PM to Friday 8 PM ET, with limit orders, whole shares and thinner trading at night.
- Tesla options are available once you’re approved, but they can lose all their value quickly.
- Before you trade TSLA overnight, LemonTrades tells you what moved it and why.
Tesla is one of the most traded stocks on Robinhood. The app makes buying it simple; knowing which order to use, and when the price on your screen isn’t the whole story, is what saves you money.
How to buy Tesla on Robinhood
- Open the app and search TSLA.
- Tap Trade, then Buy.
- Choose to buy in dollars (fractional shares, from $1) or in shares.

Which order to use
- Market order: fills right away at the best available price. Fine in regular hours for small orders.
- Limit order: sets the most you’ll pay (or the least you’ll accept). Use it in fast markets, and outside regular hours, where it’s required.
- Stop order: becomes an order when Tesla hits a price, to limit a loss. In a gap, for example overnight, it can fill well past your stop.
Extended hours and the 24 Hour Market
- Regular session: 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM ET, weekdays. Most of the day’s trading happens here.
- Pre-market and after hours: before the open and until 8:00 PM ET, with limit orders.
- 24 Hour Market: overnight trading in popular stocks, Tesla included, from Sunday 8:00 PM to Friday 8:00 PM ET, in whole shares with limit orders.
Overnight, fewer people trade, so the gap between buy and sell prices is wider and a single headline can move the price sharply. Prices then often jump at the next open. In September 2026 Robinhood also said it would let users trade some US stocks on weekends; check the app for which stocks and hours.
Why the price in the app can look “wrong”
Outside regular hours, Robinhood shows the latest extended or overnight trade, which can be well above or below the official 4:00 PM close that most websites quote. After Tesla’s earnings, for example, the after-hours price can be 5% or more away from the close. The official daily change is measured from close to close.
Tesla options on Robinhood
After you apply and are approved for options trading, you can trade Tesla calls and puts, including contracts that expire within days. They’re popular because Tesla moves so much, and that’s also why they’re risky: most short-dated options expire worthless. Learn how implied volatility prices them first: TSLA implied volatility.
Price alerts vs news alerts
Robinhood can alert you when TSLA hits a price. It won’t tell you why it got there. LemonTrades scores every Tesla headline as it breaks and sends a ⚡ alert when Tesla moves 1.5% in five minutes, with the likely cause, so you know whether a move is news, the whole market, or noise. Today’s reasons: why is Tesla stock up.
Taxes
Robinhood sends a Form 1099 each year with your gains and losses. In the US, shares held more than a year are taxed at long-term capital gains rates; shorter trades at your income tax rate.
