CPI inflation calculator

What a dollar amount from one month or year is worth in another, using the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ consumer price index, the standard US measure of inflation.

Same buying power–

CPI-U, all items, not seasonally adjusted, from the BLS (series CUUR0000SA0). Prices in a month are compared using that month’s index; October 2025 has no reading, because it wasn’t collected during the government shutdown. This calculator is LemonTrades’, built on the BLS’s data.

Inflation here is the change in the yearly average index; the headline rate in the news is usually the change over the last 12 months.

How the calculator works

The consumer price index tracks what a basket of goods and services costs: housing, food, energy, cars, medical care and more. Divide the index in the later month by the index in the earlier one, multiply by your amount, and you have the same buying power in later dollars. For example, if the index doubled, $100 then buys what $200 buys now.

Why traders watch CPI

The monthly CPI report decides much of what the Fed does next, so it moves the dollar, Treasury yields, gold and stocks within seconds of 8:30 AM ET. See what is CPI in trading and did the Fed cut rates?
