The best gold trading platform for you

MetaTrader, TradingView, cTrader, futures platforms and broker apps: what each is good at, what to look for, and how the choice changes if you’re in the US.

TL;DR

  • Choose the broker first, for safety, then a platform it supports: MetaTrader, TradingView or, in the US, a futures platform.
  • Look for charts you can read fast, stop and bracket orders, and alerts that work on your phone.
  • No platform tells you why gold just moved. LemonTrades does: breaking news, sharp moves with the likely cause, and warnings before big data.

A trading platform is the software you trade on: charts, orders and your account. The best one for gold is the one that fits how you trade, connects to a well-regulated broker, and doesn’t get in your way when gold moves fast.

Platform vs broker

The broker holds your money and fills your orders; the platform is the screen you use. Many platforms work with many brokers, so choose the broker first for safety and cost (see how to choose a broker), then a platform it supports.

The main gold trading platforms

  • MetaTrader 4 and 5: the most common platforms at forex and CFD brokers outside the US. Solid charts, and support for automated strategies (“expert advisors”). MetaTrader 5 adds more timeframes and order types.
  • TradingView: the most popular charting platform, in the browser and on your phone, with alerts and a huge community. You can trade from its charts through connected brokers.
  • cTrader: a clean alternative to MetaTrader offered by some brokers, with strong order handling.
  • Futures platforms: for US traders using gold futures, platforms like thinkorswim, NinjaTrader and the platforms of futures brokers, with depth-of-market views and bracket orders.
  • Broker apps: nearly every broker has its own web and mobile app, often the simplest choice for gold ETFs.

What to look for

  1. Charts you can read fast: multiple timeframes, drawing tools, and indicators like moving averages. New to charts? See how to read stock graphs.
  2. Order types: stop-loss, take-profit, and brackets that attach both when you enter. Gold moves fast; you need your exit set before it does.
  3. Reliability on news: platforms and connections get tested at 8:30 AM ET on CPI and jobs days.
  4. Clear costs: spreads, commissions and financing shown up front.
  5. A good mobile app, to manage a trade away from your desk.
  6. Alerts: price alerts at your levels, so you don’t have to stare at the chart.
  7. A demo mode, to try it before you fund it.

The best fit, by trader

  • Charting and analysis first: TradingView.
  • Automated strategies: MetaTrader 5.
  • US traders, active: a futures platform for micro gold futures. See the best broker to trade XAUUSD in the US.
  • Long-term holders: your stock broker’s app and a gold ETF.
  • Learning: any platform’s demo, or our free trade simulator with live prices.

What no platform does well: the why

Every platform shows you the price. Almost none tells you why it just moved. That’s a separate job: following the news wire, the economic calendar and the Fed. Most gold traders keep a news source open next to their platform, and that’s what LemonTrades is built for. It isn’t a trading platform, and it works alongside any of them.

Education, not financial advice. We don’t recommend or get paid by any platform or broker. Trading gold is risky. See our disclaimer.
