Is platinum better than gold? For jewelry and for investing

Platinum vs gold compared: price, rarity, what drives each, how they hold up as jewelry and as an investment, with both prices live.

A gold bar and a platinum bar under two crossing price lines.

TL;DR

  • Neither is simply better. Gold is the steadier store of value; platinum is rarer, more industrial and far more volatile.
  • Platinum cost more than gold for most of history, but gold has been the pricier metal since 2015, and by a wide margin now.
  • For jewelry, platinum is denser, purer (usually 95%) and hypoallergenic; gold costs less to buy and resize, and comes in more colors.
  • LemonTrades follows gold, silver and platinum for you and tells you what moved them, and why, as it happens.

Platinum sounds more exclusive, and it’s rarer. But price, demand and risk tell a more complicated story.

Why gold costs more than platinum now

Platinum traded above gold for most of the past century and was worth more than twice as much in early 2008. That flipped for good in 2015: the Volkswagen emissions scandal that year hit diesel cars, platinum’s biggest market, while central banks and investors piled into gold. In 2025 and early 2026 platinum surged: the World Platinum Investment Council counted a market deficit of about 1.1 million ounces in 2025 and expects a fourth straight deficit in 2026, and platinum set a record in January 2026, above its 2008 peak. By September it had fallen more than a third from that high.

For jewelry: platinum or gold?

  • Purity: platinum jewelry is usually 95% platinum; gold jewelry is 58% (14K) or 75% (18K) gold.
  • Allergies: platinum is hypoallergenic; some white gold contains nickel.
  • Wear: platinum scratches into a soft sheen but doesn’t wear away; white gold needs re-plating with rhodium every few years.
  • Weight and cost: platinum is heavier, and rings usually cost more because of the purity and the work involved, even with platinum cheaper per ounce.

Gold jewelry values per gram: 14K and 18K.

For investing: platinum or gold?

  • Gold is the classic hedge: a deep market, steady central bank buying and a long record as a store of value. See is gold a commodity?
  • Platinum is a bet on supply squeezes and industry, including hydrogen fuel cells. It can rise faster, and fall harder.
