The ratio rose as Tesla’s profits fell from their 2023 peak, even when the share price didn’t.
Why Tesla’s P/E is so high
Investors aren’t paying for today’s car profits, which have shrunk since 2023 with price cuts and heavy spending. They’re paying for what Tesla might earn from robotaxis, the Optimus robot, energy storage and AI. If those pay off, today’s earnings are a small fraction of future ones and the P/E looks lower in hindsight; if they don’t, the price has a long way to fall. More in why is Tesla stock so high.
How to read a P/E ratio
- It’s price ÷ earnings per share: a P/E of 30 means paying $30 for each $1 of yearly profit.
- The S&P 500 usually trades around 20 to 25 times earnings; carmakers often under 10.
- It moves with earnings as well as price: a profit drop raises it even if the stock is flat.
- GAAP or adjusted: sites using Tesla’s adjusted EPS show a lower P/E; using forecasts of next year’s profit (forward P/E) gives lower still.
Questions
What is Tesla’s P/E ratio today?
About 358, live at the top of this page.
Is a high P/E bad?
Not by itself: fast-growing companies often have high P/Es. It means the price assumes a lot of growth, so disappointments hit harder.
Why do websites show different Tesla P/E ratios?
They use different earnings: GAAP or adjusted, the last 12 months or next year’s forecast. This page uses GAAP diluted EPS from Tesla’s filings.
