NYSE: TM explained
TM is an American depositary receipt: a certificate traded in New York that stands for 10 ordinary Toyota shares held in Japan. It trades in dollars during US hours, so its price follows the Tokyo price times 10, converted at the dollar-yen rate. That means a weaker yen lowers TM even when the Tokyo price is flat. Toyota pays dividends twice a year; ADR holders receive them in dollars, less a small depositary fee and Japanese withholding tax.
